6 GLOSSARY Cannabis Agency The Cannabis Agency is a specialist area in the department of marketing au- thorisation 4 ( other therapeutic modalities and traditional medicines ) at the BfArM. It controls cultivation, harvesting, processing, quality testing, storage, packaging as well as dispensing to wholesalers and pharmacists or manufac- turers. The Cannabis Agency will take possession of the Cannabis for medicinal purposes after harvesting. Entourage effect This is understood as the increased clinical efficacy through non-Cannabis mol- ecules/substances. Here, the various terpenes are mainly mentioned. First pass effect When drugs are administered orally, a significant proportion of the active sub- stance can be metabolised in the intestine and in the liver. This reduces the amount of the drug that reaches the systemic circulation and the site of action. This phenomenon is called the first-pass effect or first-pass metabolism. The biochemical transformation that takes place can result in an effective or inef- fective metabolite. GACP "Good Agricultural and Collecting Practice (GACP) European guideline for the provision of herbal starting materials (medicinal raw materials). Good Agricul- tural and Collecting Practice (GACP) applies to the cultivation and wild collec- tion of plants and exudates from plants used as active substances or starting material for the production of active substances in medicinal products. GACP principles also apply to the initial processing steps such as washing, drying, crushing and initial extraction of medicinal plants. GMP standard GMP ("GoodManufacturing Practice") refers to the "good manufacturing prac- tice for medicinal products". The GMP rules are laid down in national and in- ternational regulations. The focal points of GMP include the requirements for hygiene, premises, equipment, documentation and controls. Terpenes Terpenes are natural, oily and aromatic compounds of the Cannabis plant and many other plant types. The terpene compounds are responsible for the strong Cannabis aroma. Many people are convinced that terpenes significantly influ- ence the effect of Cannabis. Terpenes are the secondary constituents that un- derlie the organoleptic properties of plants. They are responsible for every- thing that makes up the aroma, taste, texture, colour and temperature of plants.
