3 Introduction to the topic Market access in many areas of statutory health insurance, but increasingly also in private health insurance, is only possible through successful application. This applies equally to drugs and medical devices. For the two relevant healthcare sectors, outpatient and inpatient care, applications also determine successful market access. Applications in Germany are often particularly complicated. Deadlines must be observed, formal requirements must be taken into account, and all requested documents must also be attached to the application. Only if these necessary conditions are met will the application be accepted and processed at all. The sufficient conditions for a successful application are: professional expertise at a high le- vel, precise knowledge of social law (SGB V) and the support of the relevant professional societies. The applications are partly the same for drugs and medical devices and partly completely different. Applications also differ significantly between GKV and PKV. For almost all applications, there are official forms and a roughly regulated application pro- cedure. Nevertheless, there is enough leeway to make applications more successful. Flanking by professional societies and/or KOL Even a fully completed application is by no means sufficient to ultimately be successful. The content of the application is reviewed and examined by various institutions and committees. During this phase of the application review, the support of the relevant professional associa- tion is of great importance. If this is lacking, the chances of success of the application are considerably reduced. In addition, it is highly recommended to inform the involved stakeholders about the applica- tion at an early stage, as this will help to score points in the event of voting or dissent in the application assessment. Ultimately, it is a combination of the right application argumentati- on and the accompanying support by the relevant professional societies and co - deciding KOLs that determines the success of the application.
